There are many milestones in the journey to the present-day understanding of diabetes, from the steps it took to narrow down insulin production to the pancreas to the first diabetes patient to be treated with an insulin injection. Further back, an ancient Egyptian script speaks of an illness that caused frequent urination and excessive hunger, also describing other aspects of the condition known as diabetes. Ancient Indian physicians took note of the “sugar urine” associated with the disease and how it attracted ants—in diabetics, glucose cannot be absorbed properly by the cells and used as fuel. Diabetes can cause weight changes, fatigue, and many more symptoms. And many people who already struggled with their weight before they developed type 2 diabetes find it especially difficult to control their weight once doing so has become even more vital for their health. But new research may offer a new way to treat this long-studied disease.
